The large cone with gentle relief, which forms the entrance to the valley, has been shaped by humans for millennia. Its high altitude bocages, unique in Europe, its woods and its meadows are ideal for easy walks and village visits.
The surrounding mountains attract hikers. As you enter the bottom of the valley, towards the sources of the Drac, the slopes are steeper.
There, the Ecrins National Park offers you unspoiled nature, wild landscapes with torrents, waterfalls, balcony or steeper paths, summits accessible on foot or by climbing…
Spring sees nature explode with a thousand colors: the intense green of the meadows, the tender green of the larch trees, the yellow, blue, pink… of the trees and flowers of the fields and at altitude.
Mushroom picking outing, wildlife observation (marmots come out of their burrows, ibexes come down to eat…), flora… ski tours, mountain biking…
In summer, a wide choice of sporting activities, discoveries or visits are available to you!
Hiking, mountain biking and e-mountain biking, observation of nature and wildlife, photography, visits to religious sites, villages and museums, swimming at the Champsaur leisure center or in the Serre-Ponçon lake, paragliding, hot air ballooning, climbing, via ferrata, mountaineering…
In autumn, you have to come and see the colors of the trees preparing for winter. The red of the maples, the ocher of the beeches and especially the yellow of the larches. Brushstrokes of an impressionist painting! All summer activities are still possible with the light and tranquility so specific to this season.
In winter, with or without snow, there is plenty to do too.
Alpine skiing (in St-Léger, Ancelle, Chaillol, Orcières-Merlette, etc.), cross-country skiing (in Ancelle, Orcières, at Col Bayard), ski touring, snowshoeing, dog sledding, cani-hiking, Joëring skiing , paragliding…
The St Léger les Mélèzes resort is equipped with new snow guns and an artificial lake to supply them.

HIKING
– tour of St-Léger via the 3 Serres: starting from La Coustille, beech undergrowth then larch, view of the Ancelle plain… a concentration of varied landscapes in 3 hours of walking!
– The Malcros canal: easy hike from the Chaillol 1600 station. This balcony trail offers a superb view of the entrance to Champsaur and the ridges forming the border with Dévoluy. Open space and forest complement each other.
– Prapic and the Saut du Laire: an unmissable classic of the valley at the very end of Champsaur. Traditional hamlet, mountain pastures where marmots play, waterfall and rocky peaks of the Parc des Ecrins in the sights. Leave early or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds.
– Le Piolit: summit accessible from the Rouanne valley (Ancelle). Long hike but with an incredible 360° panorama on arrival, over the Serre Ponçon lake, Vieux Chaillol, the massifs south of the Durance…
– Tourond refuge and Vénasque pass. Easy access to the refuge can be a nice objective (welcome, blueberry pie, ibexes if they want to stop by). The rest is reserved for experienced hikers. But it’s worth it ! Invisible passages from below, wild mountain pastures, rocky cirques…
VILLAGES & MONUMENTS
– St-Bonnet en Champsaur: “our” capital is worth a detour. Its medieval center, its narrow streets, Place Grenette and its market hall, its market… are ideal for strolling. A little further on, the Vivian Maier space (French-American photographer) is interesting.
– the Pétètes chapel: above St Bonnet, this building is original. Unique naive statues…
– the hamlets of the Champoléon valley (les Borels, les Fermonds, les Gondouins) can be explored on foot or by car. Unspoilt valley, traditional buildings and “high mountain” environment. A crazy end-of-the-world charm!
